The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, in a press conference responded to a question about cooperation between Russia and Kazakhstan amidst global challenges, saying that Moscow is concerned about the security situation in the region — including the situation in Afghanistan.

According to Vladimir Putin, although Kazakhstan does not share a border with Afghanistan, some of Russia’s allied countries that do have been affected by terrorism in the past.

Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, stated: “We are members of the Collective Security Treaty Organization. Our Ministries of Defense are in constant contact and engage in regular cooperation with each other. Our common goal is only to ensure security in our area of responsibility, because without a doubt, we are concerned about certain situations, including the situation in Afghanistan. Although Kazakhstan does not border Afghanistan, there are other countries that do, and we understand that in the past, some terrorist groups have managed to infiltrate our neighboring countries.”

The Russian president’s concern over the situation in Afghanistan comes after he previously, at the conclusion of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, referred to the interim government as an ally of Moscow in the fight against terrorism.

Putin had emphasized that the “Taliban” holds power in Afghanistan, and for that reason, is a partner of Moscow in the fight against terrorism.

“Russia is one of the five permanent members of the Security Council and is considered a regional power in the area. Afghanistan’s relations with this country and other strategic understandings can be very beneficial for Afghanistan politically and in terms of security,” said Sadeq Hamidzoy, a political analyst.

In recent weeks, relations between Kabul and Moscow have significantly improved, and Russia officially accepted the Islamic Emirate’s ambassador in Moscow on the 14th of the current solar month.
