The independence movement in Pakistan’s Balochistan province has once again intensified, with the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) ramping up its operations and posing renewed challenges to the Pakistani government. Amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, the BLA appears to be leveraging the current atmosphere to amplify its longstanding demand for a separate nation.
In several parts of Balochistan, local Baloch residents have reportedly removed Pakistani national flags and hoisted flags of Balochistan in their place. Visuals circulating on social media show slogans being raised in support of Balochistan’s independence and against Pakistan.
Some groups have attributed these developments to recent regional events, including India’s Operation Sindoor and drone attacks, suggesting they have had a cascading influence on the situation in Balochistan.
A tweet by an individual named Meer Yaar Baloch has gone viral on social media in this context. The tweet, purportedly representing the BLA’s viewpoint, states: “The Baloch people have begun hoisting their own flags and removing Pakistani flags. The time has come for the international community to withdraw their embassies from Pakistan and recognize the newly emerging nation of Balochistan. Farewell to Pakistan, welcome to Balochistan.”
The Balochistan Liberation Army has already been conducting attacks targeting the Pakistani military. With the involvement of ordinary Baloch civilians in symbolic actions such as the removal of Pakistani flags, the situation has escalated further. The conflict between Baloch nationalists and the Pakistani state has persisted since 1971, and analysts believe the current regional unrest is being seen by the BLA as an opportunity to intensify their struggle for an independent Balochistan.
