Local officials in Herat report that construction work on the province’s international passenger terminal is progressing rapidly and with “full commitment.”
The project, which costs approximately $20 million, is being built over a period of three years in the southern part of Herat city, according to international standards.
The first phase of the project includes the terminal building and paving ten kilometers of road. The second phase consists of garages and a fire station, while the third phase features restaurants, a football field, and recreational parks.
Engineer Abdul Khaleq Ahmadi stated: “The construction of this terminal is being carried out in three phases. The first phase, which is set for one year, will be completed within the next seven months. Upon completion of the second and third phases, the entire project will be finalized.”
With the terminal being built on a 1,000-jerib plot of land, it is expected to reduce the movement of large passenger buses within the city and prevent traffic accidents.
Mohammad Anwar Zahid, an engineer from the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, said: “The construction of this terminal will ease traffic congestion in the city and provide significant facilities for both residents and travelers. This is an international terminal, and we can make broad use of it.”
Around 200 workers are currently employed on this major project. Many of them found employment here after being deported from Iran.
Seyyed Ahmad Yousufi, one of the workers, said: “I had lived in Iran for several years and returned a year ago. The work here is good, and I’m happy to be involved in such projects and to work in my own country.”
Mohammad Alokozai, a worker, said: “Projects like this should be launched across the country so our people can return from Iran and Pakistan and find employment. I’m very happy to see so many workers engaged here.”
The Herat passenger terminal is located in the northern part of the city, while large passenger buses pass through the city center. According to residents, this traffic has frequently led to deadly accidents.
